Workday has unveiled that AI could potentially boost productivity in UK enterprises by £119 billion, offering a significant solution to a productivity slump that has persisted for over 15 years.

The report suggests that the UK is on the cusp of a major economic transformation. Currently, productivity levels are 24% below pre-2008 projections, and AI-driven efficiency gains provide a hopeful outlook for businesses and policymakers.

The study indicates that large UK businesses could save an astounding 7.9 billion employee hours annually through strategic AI implementation. On an individual level, business leaders could save 1,117 hours per year—equivalent to 140 working days—while employees could reclaim 737 hours, or 92 working days.

Daniel Pell, VP and Country Manager for UK&I at Workday, highlighted the potential for AI to revolutionize productivity, noting, "Sizeable productivity growth has eluded UK workplaces for over 15 years – but responsible AI has the potential to shift the paradigm." Former Prime Minister Tony Blair also commented on the transformative potential of AI, suggesting that despite economic challenges, technological advancements make this an exciting time for governance.

However, the adoption of AI is not without its challenges. The report reveals that 93% of employees and business leaders harbor concerns about trusting AI. Issues such as safety, privacy, and bias concern 38% of respondents, while 34% cite the need for more time to educate teams, and 32% point to a lack of investment. Additionally, 41% of organizations struggle with unengaged employees and a lack of incentives, and 35% report inadequate technology.

Economically, the impact of AI is significant. The study estimates that an additional 2.9 hours of work per day could add £11,058 in value annually per employee. With over 10 million employees in large UK businesses, this could translate to £119 billion in productive work each year.

Despite the promise of AI, there exists a productivity paradox in the current workplace. Employees and business leaders are only genuinely productive for 5.8 and 5.9 hours of an 8-hour workday, respectively, leaving over a quarter of the day unproductive.

AI offers the potential to handle mundane and repetitive tasks, enabling workers to focus on more meaningful and impactful work. This shift could address one of the primary barriers to productivity identified in the report: unengaged employees.

The report calls for a two-pronged approach to AI integration: a thorough analysis of potential efficiencies and a transparent strategy to overcome adoption barriers. Realizing AI’s full potential in the UK economy will require a concerted effort from businesses, policymakers, and employees alike. Successfully integrating AI technologies could shape the UK's economic trajectory for years to come.
